Perspectives
Our Birthrights (Principles)

The following are seven principles that we feel to be paramount to our mental, physical, and spiritual well being. We believe that these principles are our God-given rights, as part of humanity. The way we've chosen to define them and demonstrate their significance is through a series of quotes from numerous works of art.

TRUTH

"Truth is oftentimes uncomfortable. It is only comforting to those who do not wish to ignore it. Then, the truth becomes not only comforting, but inspiring."
- Neale Donald Walsch, from the book Conversations With God (Book 3)

INCLUSION

"It's my belief that we all have the need to feel special
And it's this need that can bring out the best in us, yet the worst in us
Follow the passion that's within you
Living the truth will set you free
Put others down to fill us up
Oppressing me will oppress you
Outside leave judgement
Outside leave hate
One love's the answer you'll find in you"

- Janet Jackson, from the song "The Velvet Rope", From the album, THE VELVET ROPE

HEALING

"Can you remember when you were just 6-years old?
With a trusting heart believing everything you're told
Anyone bigger must have been right, even if they were wrong
You take what was given, you didn't know better
All your little mind could comprehend was goodness and truth
Even when the baddest things were being done to you
Ain't it a shame how we pay for your innocence when you take what was given
You didn't know better bout: lovin, cheatin, people leavin, dyin, livin, losin & forgivin
Growin, sayin no and bein who you are...
What about the time when you became 16-years old?
With an unsure heart accepting some of what you're told
Wanting to be someone different, but there's pressure to be the same
So you take what was given - you didn't know better
All that you could think about what you should and should not do
Every single insecurity was magnified for you
And suddenly you began to feel all the contradictions, but you take what was given
You didn't know better bout: lovin, cheatin, people leavin, dyin, livin, losin and forgivin
Growin, sayin no and bein who you are...
Now here you are a little older than before
You really been through it and you might go through some more
But if there's one precious thing you've learned - it's that you can't just take what was given, 'cuz now you know better bout: lovin, cheatin, people leavin, dyin, livin, losin, & forgivin, growin, sayin no and bein who you are..."

- Mondo Grosso featuring Amel Larrieux, from the song "Now You Know Better" from the album MONDO GROSSO

JOY

"Joy is the willingness to keep moving no matter what. Joy is courage to go boldly where you are advised not to go. Joy is the freedom and ability to make conscious choices in the face of seeming disaster, by accepting and acknowledging that you are a creative being on a divine journey, and that nothing but the Divine can stop you"
- Iyanla Vanzant, from the book "One Day My Soul Just Opened Up"

FREEDOM

"You can tell by the expression I wear
Though I seem a little strange to you, I don't really care
I got the freedom to be, and there are others like me everywhere...
And I'm not completely insane...
I may be just a little bit crazy...
There's no one to blame/got no shame bout my game
Don't want nobody to save me..."

- Alana Davis, from the song "Crazy" from the album BLAME IT ON ME

RESPONSIBILITY

"I just know now that the only way to get out is through confrontation...
We always thought it was retreat, run away, and I'm telling you, you gotta confront it"

- Lauryn Hill, from "Interlude 3" from the album MTV UNPLUGGED 2.0

LOVE

"Love is that which is unlimited. There is no beginning and no end to it. No before and no after. Love always was, always is, and always will be. So love is also always. It is the always reality. Now we get back to another word we used before - freedom. For if love is unlimited, and always, then love is...free. Love is that which is perfectly free."
- Neale Donald Walsch, from the book Conversations With God (Book 2)
